Crosswords that teach you a language, one word at a time.
Something wrong, or just a question? Write to nextgenpowertoys@gmail.com. We read every message and usually reply within a couple of days.
If you are reporting a problem, the section at the bottom lists the four things that make it far quicker to fix.
What the game is
CrossLangWord builds criss-cross crossword puzzles from themed vocabulary, in the language you are learning. Pick a language, a grid size and a topic, and the app generates a puzzle from that topic's word list. Clues are written in the same language as the answers, so you are reading and writing the language rather than translating from English.
Languages
Puzzles currently ship in English, Russian, Hebrew and Italian. Each has its own keyboard laid out the way native speakers expect — QWERTY, ЙЦУКЕН, and a right-to-left Hebrew keyboard. Spanish, French and German are in preparation.
Topics and sizes
Fifteen topics — food, animals, travel, the body, music, science and space, home and furniture, and more — across four grid sizes from small to extra large. Larger grids need a bigger vocabulary pool, so not every topic offers every size in every language yet; sizes that are unavailable simply do not appear on the chooser screen.
Playing
How do I change the language, size or topic?
They are all on the chooser screen, which appears before each puzzle. Tap the back arrow at the top left of a puzzle to return to it. Tap More topics to shuffle a fresh set of six.
How do I type an answer?
Tap any cell to select a word — the clue for it is highlighted in yellow and the clue list scrolls to it. Tap the same cell again to switch between the across and down word that share it. Then type on the keyboard at the bottom.
Some letters are already filled in.
That is deliberate. Every puzzle opens with a few letters revealed to give you a way in, chosen so they never give away a whole word.
I am completely stuck.
Reveal letter fills in the letter at the selected cell. Reset clears the grid and starts the same puzzle over.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Letters are saved as you type, so closing the app or switching away does not lose the puzzle. Everything is stored on your device only.
Does it work offline?
Completely. All puzzles and word lists are built into the app. A connection is only ever used to load an ad.
Hebrew puzzles look reversed.
They should not. Hebrew across-words are written right to left, so the first letter of an answer sits at the right end of its run, and clue numbers sit in the top-right corner of the cell. Down words read top to bottom as usual. If something genuinely reads backwards, that is a bug and we would like a screenshot.
Why did I get an ad?
Ads pay for the app. They only appear after you finish a puzzle — never during one, and never if you leave a puzzle unfinished. There are none until you have completed two, and after that roughly one every one to three puzzles. See the privacy policy for what is and is not shared (short version: no tracking, no advertising identifier).
Can I get rid of the ads?
Yes — a single one-off purchase removes them for good. Remove ads is at the bottom of the chooser screen, along with Restore purchase if you have bought it before or are on a new device. There is no subscription.
Reporting a problem
A clue or answer looks wrong
These reports are genuinely valuable. The word lists are large and not every clue has been checked by a native speaker yet, so mistakes do get through — a clue that gives the answer away, an unnatural phrasing, a word that is not really used, or a clue that does not match its answer. Send us the language, the topic, and the clue text or a screenshot, and it will be corrected in the next content update.
Anything else
Crashes, a puzzle that will not load, a keyboard that will not accept a letter, a layout that is cut off — all worth telling us about. Four things make it much faster to fix:
- Your device and OS version — for example iPhone 15, iOS 18.5.
- The app version, from the App Store or Play Store listing.
- The language, topic and grid size you were playing.
- A screenshot. For anything visual this usually replaces the other three.
Requests
Wanting a language, a topic, or a feature that is not there is useful signal, not noise — tell us. Spanish, French and German are already planned, and requests help decide the order.
